GRADING POLICY

40% REHEARSALS: Based on daily class participation and preparation. Students will be assessed weekly using the Class Participation/Preparation Scoring Guide.

20% PERFORMANCES: Every performance (Marching and Concert) is required and needs to be made-up if missed.

20% INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: Students are graded on an individual basis in relation to their own potential and initial level of musicianship and how they progress from that point. Includes the audition score and playing exams given periodically throughout the year as part of the lesson structure.

20% TEST/QUIZES: Examinations will be given at the end of each semester. Tests and/or quizzes and writing prompts may be administered at the teacher’s discretion during the semester.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

In this class, an unexcused absence must be cleared in the office within 72 hours of the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to clear any absences with their music teacher. If this is not done, the absence will be recorded as unexcused. Make-up will be mutually agreed upon with the teacher and must be done within the agreed upon time limit.

During any nine-week grading period:

Five Absences – Grade may be lowered up to one (1) letter grade if a student fails to complete assigned make-up.

Nine Absences - Grade may be lowered up to two (2) letter grades if a student fails to complete assigned make-up.

More than nine absences – Up to teacher’s discretion

ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AT ALL PERFORMANCES. Absence from a concert performance must be made up, as this is part of your class grade. The make-up will involve a graded project and/or playing exam as arranged by the student with the teacher.

See your ensemble director well in advance (at least 4 weeks) if you have a schedule conflict. Work conflicts cannot be considered an excused absence. You have made a commitment to this performing organization and the ensemble is counting on you. Plan ahead to prevent problems.

NOTE: See the Conflict Policy on page 36 in your student handbook.
